Research, concept, creation

Every year, the Zirkusquartier invites numerous circus performers to take up residencies of varying lengths.

The residencies often end with a public showing (work-in-progress) or a public workshop.

Application

We offer residencies of 1 week in the research phase, for projects in an advanced phase with a dossier we offer residencies of 1 – 2 weeks.

There are 2 allocation rounds for the residences. The first round allows us to make long-term plans. The remaining places are allocated in the 2nd round.

Fall / Winter (September – February)

  • The Zirkusquartier will move in winter 2026/2027. As a result, we will not be offering residences from fall 2026 until spring 2027. We will offer residences again from June 2027 at the earliest.

Spring / Summer (March – August)

  • 1st award round: Applications until September 1, 2025
  • 2nd award round: Applications until January 6, 2026

For an application we need:

A project description of what you would like to do (approx. 1 A4 page). If you have sketches, inspirational photos or videos, please feel free to attach them. In addition, a short CV of all participants. Please also state your space requirements, what you need technically and when you would like to come.

It is possible to show a work-in-progress at the end of the residency. This is carried out and hosted independently by the artists.

More info

The residencies take place in the event room. In the event room there are suspension points/tensioning points, a sound system with AUX connection and a few lighting moods that are easy to operate. You can find more information about the infrastructure here.

The event room is only separated from the training room by a curtain. There is usually no activity in the training room in the morning, so it is quiet. From 12.00 to 15.15 there is the open training for professionals, it can be agreed with you whether you are allowed to play music or not. There are weekly courses from Mondays to Thursdays from 3.30 p.m. to around 10 p.m. The courses are easy to hear and have priority at this time. The event room can be used at a moderate volume during this time.

If you are coming with a car or caravan, please let us know in advance.

Swiss Circus Arts Network

Are you looking for premises that are suitable for your circus discipline to work on an idea or an emerging creation?

In collaboration with Pro Helvetia and a Switzerland-wide association of
venues, Swiss Circus Arts Network offers residencies for circus professionals.
This association currently includes:

Each year, around five companies are selected by this network to reside for three to six weeks within
two years at at least two of the venues
and take part in a network meeting each November.
The aim is to strengthen networking in the local contemporary circus scene and to
improve research, rehearsal and production opportunities for circus creations
in Switzerland.

The residencies include free accommodation and rehearsal space as well as
a financial residency contribution. This currently amounts to CHF 400 per week for a
solo residency, CHF 750 for a duo, CHF 1000 for a trio and CHF 1200 for groups of four or more people.

Please note the requirements:

  • The competition is aimed at professional artists in the field of contemporary circus.
  • You have a connection to Switzerland in the form of Swiss members and/or a current place of work in Switzerland.
  • Die Compagnie nimmt an den beiden Netzwerktreffen teil. Diese finden jedes Jahr bei einem anderen Veranstaltungsort statt, voraussichtlich am Montag nach der Nuit du cirque.

Application deadline for 2026/27: November 1, 2025
Application deadline for 2027/28: November 1, 2026
