Fragmented and Deconstructed: Work in Progress
Marta and Milena approached the same trapeze research in different ways. Both are exploring the movement qualities of their new trapezes, which are an unconventional and self-built trapeze construction. Their paths crossed unexpectedly when they applied for a residency at Zirkusquartier at the same time. After being approached for a joint residency, they agreed and met for the first time during the residency. Together, they want to deepen their research on the trapezes before continuing to work on their own solo projects. These self-designed and custom-made trapezes are part of their artistic identity. During their time together, Milena and Marta focus intensively on exploring the interplay of body, space and structure, questioning how these elements interact on and off the trapeze. Their work goes beyond technique and focuses on a deeper exchange of ideas. Each artist brings their unique perspective and through experimentation they challenge and inspire each other.
Marta
Marta Matovelle is a circus artist with a background in art history. She likes to look at the same thing from different angles and bring joy to encounters. In her practical work, she places great emphasis on the malleability of movement and incorporates her interest in fine art and architecture. She enjoys deforming, “breaking” her trapeze because it allows her freedom in a profound exploration.
Milena
Milena Hofmann works as a freelance artist and circus teacher. She is particularly interested in the trapeze and, more recently, the vertical rope and handstand. Milena quickly realized that she didn’t have to choose between the different disciplines, but instead created a unique piece of equipment that combines all three disciplines. The skillful use of the self-built device, the “Trotzdem-Trapez”, allows her to soften the rigid separation between the ground and the air.
