10 Years of Zirkusquartier

The Zirkusquartier is celebrating its 10th anniversary

On November 13 and 14, as part of the Nuit du Cirque, we’ll be celebrating with shows, music, and a festive circus night full of surprises! Featuring Sandscapes, Ueli Hirzel will give us a taste of circus life, and Laurence Felber, Silvan Strübel, and Caroline Schenk will perform “Dark Glowing”: a concert and trapeze act in one—a dark, mesmerizing experience and an acoustic feast. There will be drinks from the bar, wraps from the Zirkus Chnopf food stand, and on Saturday, a party that lasts well into the night.

From a Winter Quarters to a Center for Contemporary Circus

In 2016, the Zirkusquartier was established on the initiative of Zirkus Chnopf as a production venue in the spring and a home base for the winter months. Over the past 10 years, the Zirkusquartier has evolved significantly—from a winter retreat offering a few classes and the occasional open stage to a hub for contemporary circus in Switzerland and internationally.

The diverse program of shows, workshops, and courses attracts a wide audience, and the production and training opportunities for circus artists contribute to the further development of the contemporary circus scene in Switzerland. Through its annual co-production with Zirkus Chnopf, the Zirkusquartier has built, nurtured, and developed a strong partnership over the past 10 years—a partnership that is set to continue for the next 10 years as well.

Change has been a constant companion of the Zirkusquartier over the past ten years: the move from the former Koch Areal to the Güterbahnhof, securing six-year programme funding from the City of Zurich, and now planning for the new building in the Koch Quarter, scheduled to open in 2027, have kept us on our toes. At the same time, these changes have made the Zirkusquartier a wonderfully dynamic and vibrant place.
