Welcome to the cabaret Zum Ewigen Spiesser – a panopticon of shoals and longings. Here people live, love, laugh, lie and cheat.
These are the words with which the washed-up emcee greets his audience, including a handful of regulars who are making their way through life as best they can: car salesman Alfons Kobler has come into some money through a crooked deal and sets off for the World Expo in Barcelona in order to find himself a rich wife to secure his future. The former seamstress Agnes Pollinger decides to finally become more practical from an erotic point of view. Mr. Brunner, a would-be journalist who has failed as a dental technician, performs as a musician and magician together with two elderly entertainers in a cabaret, and the unemployed waiter Eugen Reithofer spends the last of his money on the cinema and unexpectedly proves to be a good person.
Munich 1929, Schellingstrasse, but not where it begins so elegantly at the Ludwigskirche, but where it ends. This is where Horváth’s gaze falls on the human comedy on a small scale and in general.
